Wildlife biologist Leon Kolankiewicz writes in his commentary that the Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife and other environmental groups have condemned the fence under construction along the U.S.-Mexican border claiming it will disturb the habitat and movements of sensitive wildlife like pygmy owls and jaguars. However, what is woefully inconsistent — even hypocritical — is the environmental lobby’s refusal to get riled up about the ecological damage caused by the rampant, unsustainable U.S. population growth that illegal immigration exacerbates. The wildlife habitat eliminated to accommodate an additional 3 million people annually is on a scale far more widespread than the border fence.
