US Immigration Policy Likely to Boost Population

As the new US Administration and Congress begin to tackle immigration reform, they will again be faced with the weighty question of how large should America’s population be in the future. Should America’s population continue to grow indefinitely, perhaps doubling to 600 million by the end of the century? Clearly, any answer to this vital demographic question has serious and far-reaching economic, political, social and environmental consequences for America as well as for the international community of nations.  Read the full study at Yale Global Online.

  • Guess I'm weighing in firmly behind Edweirdness.  I live in the American Southwest, the fastest growing region of the world's fourth fastest growing nation. At the same time, the Southwest is effectively OUT OF WATER!  Even the U.S. Bureau of Reclammation--ever a promoter of boom growth--admits that Lake Powell, the second largest reservoir in the United States, can never be refilled at today's population in the Southwest.  Meanwhile, there are scientific studies showing even odds that Lake Mead, that icon of American ingenuity and progress and the largest reservoir in the nation, might actually run dry, and that without the likely influence of global warming!  This is so likely that Las Vegas, NV, which depends on Lake Mead/Hoover Dam for 90 percent of its water, is in an emergency program to construct a new intake at the BOTTOM of Lake Mead because its two current intakes might soon be unable to draw water.  For further insight, bear in mind that half of all growth on the planet will happen in just eight nations:  India, Pakistan, Nigeria, China, THE UNITED STATES, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  How are we or the planet going to solve any of our environmental problems with the world's industrial heavy weights also its population heavyweights?

Politicians and the news media ignore the population elephant in the room. Heck, the media without hesitation promote unfetter population growth.  As a result, we are denied a national discussion about the implications of the population explosion immigration is driving and what type of nation we want for our children, even though Americans, I think, I have shown that with an essentially replacement-level birth rate since the early 1970s--an effort subverted by unfettered immigration.

Also, I find that it is the politically correct among us, more than minorities, who worry about "racist attitudes."  When I began to speak out on this subject, I was deeply touched at New Mexico Hispanics who contacted me thanking me, and why shouldn't they. Cesar Chavez once offered the United Farm Workers to help patrol the border, and who, after all, is most hurt by open borders?  It is our own minority poor, such as a friend of mine who was told not to push too hard for a pay increase at work or she'd find herself replaced by an illegal border crosser.  How come racism only applies to immigrants?  Isn't it racist to ignore unemployed Hispanics and blacks who are native born?

  • Edweirdness you are correct in your assesment of the problems we face if we do not, as  nation bring immigration under control. This is a major problem. We do not, however solve the problem if we approach it with a racist attitude. There are those who do not understand that we must use reason and good communication to work through this issue. I would be interested too see some proposals from CHUCKJG976 as how we might deal with this problem. Input and suggestions will be the order of the day. Communicate with you representitives and those who are involved directly on this issue. I think if we all work together we can reach a resolution and make our country a better place to live.

  • Overpopulation, congestion, urban sprawl, an overstressed energy sector, crumbling infrastructure, diminishing resources, vanishing farm land and green space, overcrowded schools and hospitals, lack of affordable housing, crime, pollution, depressed wages, increased tax burdens, the balkanization of our communities, the marginalization of American citizens, taxpayers and voters, the overall decline in quality of life, are all the result of unconstrained immigration. Too many people competing for the same limited resources is not sane, sustainable social, economic, or environmental policy! America has been population stable for decades. That is to say that the births to American citizens is approximately equal to the number of American citizens who die or leave the country. Arguments that there is a 'shortage of workers' are patently false. A fact that is supported by the millions of American citizens who cannot find gainful employment.

Virtually every industrialized nation, China, Great Britain, Mexico, the European Union, have all taken dramatic steps to stabilize the population growth they experience through immigration. These nations are putting an end to illegal immigration, and have implemented policies to curtail legal immigration to only that which is prudent, demonstrably necessary, readily assimilated, and above all other concerns, that which is in the best interests of their native workers and populations. It's dangeroulsy misguided to sugget that the United States not do likewise. There are no problems confronting America's citizens that would not be measurably improved by securing our borders and ports, and enforcing our immigration laws.
